The election Retailer of the Year was first organized in the Netherlands in 2003, and has expanded ever since. Besides in The Netherlands, the election has also been organized in Belgium since 2006. This Year the election Retailer of the Year is organized in ten European countries. Germany, Italy and France have been added in 2008 and since 2009 the election has also been organized in Spain, Switzerland and Austria. Luxembourg was added in 2010 and as from this year the election will also be held in Russia.
The concept originated from the desire of consumers to share their opinion on their favourite shops. The purpose of the election is generating positive media attention for retailers. The retailers will be crowned because according to the consumer they for example provide the best services concerning price, assortment and service. The winners will be crowned because they have the highest score on the nine most important aspects in a store according to the consumer.
Due to the online developments in the retail landscape, a similar election has been organized for webshops in the last couple of years. This year the election ‘Webshop Awards’ is organized in the same countries as Retailer of the Year, except for Luxembourg and Russia. Lastly, the retailer who best combines both the physical store and the webshop will be awarded the ‘Cross-Channel Award’.
